Here’s our elk hunting pack list to ensure you’re fully prepared.

The Complete Pack List for Elk Hunting

There’s nothing worse than going on a hunting vacation and realizing you’ve forgotten an essential item. Our recommended pack list for an elk hunt should cover all the basics, but feel free to put your personal touch when packing yourself.

Hunting Apparel Appropriate for the Weather and Environment

You need something to wear while out on a hunt, so be sure to pack appropriate hunting apparel. Your hunting apparel should be appropriate for the environment in which you’ll be hunting. In Southeast Idaho, we typically wear dull shades of brown and gray to match the mountainous terrain.

In addition to wearing apparel appropriate for the environment, you’ll also want to pay attention to the weather. It can get quite chilly in Newdale, so we recommend wearing layers. And don’t forget boots!

Water Bottle

Staying hydrated is essential, so carry a water bottle with you at all times. At our ranch, you’ll likely be dealing with a higher elevation than you’re used to, and staying hydrated can help combat nausea, fatigue, and headaches.

Calls

We highly recommend adding at least a cow call to your elk hunting pack list. When you’re hunting with us, your guide will typically use a call, so you may not need to use yours, but it is good to have just in case.

Binoculars

Squinting off into the distance to try to spot elk isn’t always the most effective method. You can easily see elk from afar with binoculars. We recommend using lightweight binoculars with a carrying strap for ease of use.

Rangefinders

On our guided elk hunts in Idaho, it is likely that you will be taking shots from a longer distance than you’re used to. That’s where rangefinders can really assist you; they help improve your shooting accuracy.
